[问题]Unable to fire up SCIM....help needed

ok guys heres what i have:
Ubuntu 7.10 with default SCIM
I never got SCIM working. I set the hotkeys, i disabled compiz, none of them helps solving my issue.
Can anyone show me the complete list of packages that I need to get SCIM working? i've installed the meta package for zh, and the chinese language support from the system menu, what else do i need to get it work? i remember i got it working with ubuntu 6.10 last year......
any help would be greatly apprieciated!!!
