and reconfig it again

what does dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg change? Just xorg.conf?
I think xorg.conf is fine, because I have no problem with displaying right now. The problem is that the xsession can't open /etc/profile but I do have /etc/profile.

zhuqin, i granted 777 to /etc/profile and everything is back to normal right now!!! Thanks a million for your kind help.
By the way, I used DISPLAY=:0 googleearth. but nothing shows up.

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa ~/google-earth/googleearth
solved by doing this.
I am not sure if I were on xgl. I think I am since beryl is running ok. I can't use mouse to control googleearth's pan and zoom. well, it is not that important anyway. I can dig into it myself.
